Laserdiscs sometimes were mastered from old VHS tapes! Many were from the best analog sources, but then not all. Also remember thay were from ANALOG sources. Even the best was from a video tape, professional grade.

Maybe I should clarify! On an NTSC machine they are supurb! 450 lines of crytal clarity!
Yes they are analog.....But I have never seen a plain vhs tape resolution look as good.
There is somthing strange about the look on an HD. Color bleeds and of couse pixeling (which of course is not from the "anolog source".
Line doubling has come down to about $600 I hear. Still a bit expensive for my taste. Besides I just spent 3700 dollars on an HD and P-scan DVD player. What's a mother to do!

all DVDs are from an analog source too...it's called film.
analog film, man, it doesn't get any better...one of the hurdles faced by HDTV is exactly the point you make:
the origional 60s Star Trek episodes were filmed, while the Next Generation is all on pro video tape. They both look fine on our standard tv sets, but on HDTV, Star Trek looks like film, and The Next Generation looks like crap.
same thing we cope with on our hi-resolution hi-fi systems: bad recordings may sound fine over the radio or in the car, but become practically unlistenable on the dedicated he-man rig.
nothing beats going to the movies--even with the rude, insensitve patrons who talk and kick your seatback--it's still as good as it gets.
