What's the status of current flat panel displays vs. CRT's. I have a space retriction in one room so that its either a flat panel (42-50") or nothing. Do the newer panels better compare in contrast to CRT's? Any recommendations to go and audition? I'd like to keep it to within 4 figures.

So far there are NO flat panel display who can better a Good CRT display. However, 42" plasma display price should come down dramatically this year. Here in Hong Kong, the new Sony 42" plasma now retail for USD8.8K and a Fujitsu old version is now about 6.4K Four digit is not a problem.....
