I will be moving to Europe (from US) in a couple of months. Would like to install a good theater in my new house that I can use already here and also with my existing NTSC equipment. Does anyone know of good front projectors that support both these standards? Also comments on rear projections or plasma screens welcome! Thanks.

Hi JSA few years ago, I did the opposite (moved from Europe to US). I took my PAL TV with me and used it with NTSC VCR (via composite video cable) and it worked perfectly. these days most stuff had S-Video and Component video, which I guess would also work, as there is no NTSC/PAL encoding. So you can buy a projector in US and use it OK in Europe with one of these inputs

I think that you'll find many lcd, dlp and crt projectors handle both formats (not all, but many). I have a sony 70series crt and it does both and has multiple memories for the formats. If you use a crt, you'll have to have it set up in each place in any case and the tech can do this for you. If you use a fixed panel system like a dlp or lcd, this is not as much of a big deal (although they can certainly be calibrated to some degree as well). One thing to consider will be convenience of what you want to "carry" -- my sony weighs about 180 pounds and is quite a clunker for set up. (picture is stunning though)Only other point (and not a problem if the system does both tv systems) is to watch about voltages.
As far as I'm aware most sets sold in the uk are multistandard these days.
Thanks Roland. Any idea of the prices compared to the US?

My 36" Sony CRT set cost £2,100. Projectors are around £3,000 and up, projection sets are from £1,500 up and plasmas are from around £5,000 up. Sony 36" gives the best available picture IMHO at the moment, unless size is the real issue.

HiWe have a Barco set up but, as with any front projector, a lot of care is needed to optimise the picture. See my post further down "Tale of Projector Frustration" at http://www.VideoAsylum.com/ht/messages/5303.html
Feel free to email me if you want further detail.
PS - you will be impressed by the quality of PAL.

Great info, John!Is a different setup needed for NTSC and PAL (i.e. would the technician also have to know about NTSC signals and peripherals)?
Thanks, Jan
I can only answer with reference to Barco. Our set up has 6 inputs. Each has its own set of parameters.
Two of our inputs are from sources which can read PAL and NTSC software - a laserdisc player and a DVD player. The player and the projector automatically detect which system is being supplied. However there can be different parameter settings for PAL than for NTSC. The Barco has a series of memory banks which store the info. Once the Barco is set up the only two settings the user needs to alter are the source and the screen size (4:3, 16:9, 2.35:1 etc).
So, to answer your question, the technician would use NTSC & PAL software (DVD or LD) to help set it all up for each input & video type.
