The Wegas are the only SDTVs I've seen that offer a 16:9 mode as a menu option, but there are quite a few that will do it "unofficially" via the service menu. My guess is that your set is one of them. Check this site out for details:

Try hometheaterforum.com's TV and Projectors area,also. 36" standard TVs are preyty expensive, and with HD/Progressive compatible sets coming down in price, I'd never buy a standard NTSC set. You can get an RCA MM36110 for about $1500 online, and it's got every connection you can imagine. The picture is better than the 36XBR400, to boot.
