  If you have component capability use it every time. It requires 3 leads as the colours are separated and therefore feed through with greater purity of signal. Composite only uses one lead (all colours composed up together). Do not waste dollars on fancy expensive video cables - not necessary.

    Well actually sorta disagree. Replace the cheap crap that comes with the DVD player with something decent say around $50 to $100 and you will see a difference. I agree that spending any more than that is a waste.

      John is right in that cable isn't as important as, say, interconnects between a Sonic Frontiers pre-amp and a Meridian CD player, but I think Estes overshoots with his $50-100 price range. Accessories4Less.com has a decent set of IXOS 2-meter component video cables for about $35, and you could always go RatShack Gold for about $20.

      I've A-B'd composite vs. S-video and S-video vs. component on a 32" Panasonic fed by a Toshiba DVD player and component clearly comes out ahead in the accuracy and richness of colors. S-video is close behind but composite lags badly.

        Sorry I was quoting Canadian prices. The Canadian dollar is about $.60 USD. But I think we all agree that you need something better than what comes in the box with most DVD players. That wire is poor at best and picks up lots of interference in my experience. I also agree with John that the audio interconnects are the place to spend your money.

          Thats also misjudged, because of the frequencies involved video signals are more likely to be degraded by poor quality cable than audio. Talk to a broadcast engineer about the problems with signal loss over long cable runs.

            Yes there are a lot problems with transmission. I have noticed improvements with better quality cables over the really cheap stuff, but like John, I find that above a certain price the differences are not visible on a standard NTCS tv.
