I'm in the market for an A/V reciever without going into major debt. I'm looking for a DD reciever for about $700 - $800. Any suggestions on some good quality recievers in this price range? Also, any thoughts on features to look out for when buying one? I'm new to this board and appreciate any help I can get.
Check out the Harman Kardon AVR-75. Orginially priced at $1300 can now be had for about $500 at onecall.com, and even cheaper at ubid.com. It's DD only, no DTS. Check out the reviews on A/R, it's got 49 reviews with a 4.64 average rating..
I just bought an HK AVR65. Same features as the '75, I believe, just less power. Now here's the shocker....the thing actually sounds great! No offense to the receiver crowd, but my audio-only system has $15k worth of tube preamp and amps, and I'm not a solid state kinda guy. So this was a very pleasant surprise. I bought it for the video system, where sound quality is not a big priority, although I did want something that was at least inoffensive. I think part of the HK's good sound is due to the use of discrete output components, something lacking in many (if not all) of the Japanese brands. I'll give the 2 big thumbs up to the HK, especially at its' $399 sale price.
The 700 - $800 price range is in Canadian dollars BTW
The 795 is a good component but I don't think it switches S-video, if that is one of your objectives with multiple S-video sources. But, for your price range you won't find all the nice features.
Ryan- I believe the new Yamaha RV-795 has Dolby Digital and sells for about $500 here in the States. I don't know the current exchange rate but that price should put it near your range.
