In Reply to: Re: A/V reciever that has true analog bypass? posted by scooterrat on March 09, 2001 at 13:07:38:
Scooter,The SP_1 is a preamp/processor, not a receiver, and retails for US$3800. That doesn't mean it's a bad product!
B&K AVR305, B&K AVR307 have stereo and 5.1 analog bypass.
Several others are out there as well, I'm fairly sure.

i think my nad t751 ($750 us) has it. ill have to check my manual.
I guess I missread his post and did the conversion from US dollars to Canadian backwards...If I could get the SP-1 for $2300.00 that would rock!
I always associate 5.1 w/ the digital domain.I understand you can have surround in analog (e.g., dolby prologic).
But "5.1 analog bypass" suggests (to me) an analog source with 5.1 channels. How is that possible?
Just curious...I tend to favor analog by pass in A/V preamps simply because I have alot invested in both my tuner and my turntable and wish to avoid A/D and D/A conversion. But I always am thinking "2-channel."
thanks.
Well 12stepper, there are two high resolution digital formats in the marketplace, DVD-Audio and SACD.Curiously, the high resolution output is only available as an analog signal, with the exception of Meridian (demonstrated digitally passing DVD-A but not to market, in proprietary format) MSB (can add capability to pass the high res signals via ANOTHER proprietary format and Sharp SACD (prototype demonstrated at CES). So to properly handle a 5.1 source from an analog output, you need to have a 5.1 analog bypass (aka direct) input.
Without it, you go through yet another A/D conversion, followed by another D/A conversion, assuming your piece can handle the 6 channel input at all.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
5.1 analog bypass would be used when you were inputing(up to 6 channels)from a different proc/decoder and you wanted that signal to pass thru to the amp then to output(speakers) unaltered. The source had all ready preformed the D/A conversion.
just theory on my part....waitting to be corrected

Gandalfcrow,Direct and Analog bypass are often used interchangably.
