Don't be embarrased, your question is not stupid. But you need to find what cause this pops. Since you replaced receiver already we shall assume it was not broken.Disconnect all inputs from receiver. All cables, but power cord and main speakers. Then select any input (CD) and turn volume to normal level. Does it happen again? If it does it's comming from power supply line. If this is right you got yourself a big problem here. If it does not happen, then start plugging in components one by one and after each that you plug in, listen for problems. When you get to one that makes pops, you have isolated culprit(s).
