Check out the Harman Kardon AVR-75. Orginially priced at $1300 can now be had for about $500 at onecall.com, and even cheaper at ubid.com. It's DD only, no DTS. Check out the reviews on A/R, it's got 49 reviews with a 4.64 average rating..
I just bought an HK AVR65. Same features as the '75, I believe, just less power. Now here's the shocker....the thing actually sounds great! No offense to the receiver crowd, but my audio-only system has $15k worth of tube preamp and amps, and I'm not a solid state kinda guy. So this was a very pleasant surprise. I bought it for the video system, where sound quality is not a big priority, although I did want something that was at least inoffensive. I think part of the HK's good sound is due to the use of discrete output components, something lacking in many (if not all) of the Japanese brands. I'll give the 2 big thumbs up to the HK, especially at its' $399 sale price.
