I just read a story that Circuit City is pulling the plug on that idiotic idea called DIVX. If true, I ask that we all rejoice and say good riddance and hope that the entertainment industry does not try to foist anymore dumb ideas like that in the future. The people have spoken.
Hooray! For once the *inferior* format dies!:)I forget the name of the law firm involved, but I think they also represent powerful forces within the film industry.
I read with interest the various news reports re DIVX throughout its brief life. One thing I consistently noted was the articles ref'd to the owners of DIVX as Circuit City, and a Los Angleles law firm. I was always interested in why no one ever mentioned the name of the firm in question. Now I hear that DIVX has tanked.Having suffered from the law industry's "deep pockets" approach to law suits (i.e., so what you had nothing to do with a problem, we're sueing everyone), I have come to believe that Shakespear got it right long ago when he said "kill the lawyers" It gives me some small pleasure in knowing that this unnamed law firm now is paying a penalty for adding nothing but confusion to the emergance of DVD technolgy. Perhaps that is petty, but it is tough to generate much sympathy for these guys.
And get this: they claim that the format failed because the film industry didn't release enough titles and the retail outlets wouldn't stock them. Always somebody else's fault. They didn't think for a minute that it just might have been a bad idea.
It is indeed true. I think I'll throw a party to celebrate.
Circuit City bit into a big green weenie with that idea. I agree with Tom that it is sad about the probable loss of jobs. It's also unfortunate for those who bought into the promise only to be left with limited or useless product. I feel less empathetic with the investors however; they should've known better (i.e. the whole concept looked like a losing proposition from the outset, IMHO).AuPh
....I feel bad about the fact that some people will lose their job due to the death of DIVX. However, I do think that the head honchos at Circuit City and the entertainment law firm got what they deserved.Tom S.
