You probably have bad SCART cable, or one of it's connectors. Try another cable.

Tried this to no avail. Took the deck to my dealer with a tape, he could find no fault so pointed to the scart on the back of the TV. Latest view is that a tape I recorded in standard VHS gave problems on a friends machine so can't be the TV. Could it be the allignment of the head?
