Presently I have been recording movies from DVD with an older(1995?)VCR. I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to a S-VHS deck? how old do I have to go to avoid macrovision? How can I tell if the unit doesn't include macrovision?
Follow Ups:
Check out a company called SIMA. They have a "video enhancer" which eliminates the macvision. I've used it now for several "backups" and it works great. DVD to SVHS (good quality tape like TDK) while bulky (tape vs. dvd) is a lot cheaper than getting a DVD recorder. Quality is good to about 400 lines (dvd=480, vhs=240). Only drawback is sound. You can only get prologic vs 5.1.
... on two fronts.1. S recorders have better innards & circuitry
2. You have the option of using S-tape for special recordings.
I cannot answer your query about macrovision. National/Technics/Panasonic (not sure which title is used in other countries) give excellent results. However, if you are after quality recordings, do not buy a budget recorder.
