  The betacam sp tapes are metal, and the older betacam tapes will play, but I don't think they will record. The metal tapes take different bias and eq. They may cause excessive wear on the heads. I am sure, somewhere on the net, there are the original tapes.

    Thanks db for taking the time and trouble in responding to my enquiry,
    I thought there may be a problem with compatability (old with new)
    I found a large quantity of betacam SP tapes in a rubbish skip a few days ago...
    I have always prefered using my old Betamovie camcorder compared with the modern mini cams.
