I have a 5 channel receiver powering a Boston Acoustics Micro 90 speaker system for television/movies. Here's the question: I have a subwoofer output on the back of the receiver (single RCA). The Micro 90 system has a powered subwoofer, and the sub can be hooked up either by running an additional set of wires from the speaker outputs of the receiver, or via an RCA input from the subwoofer output of the receiver. Problem is that the subwoofer has a pair of RCA inputs (L + R), and the receiver has only a single output, which makes a Y-adapter necessary. Am I likely to get better sound running the additional set of speaker cables, or using the subwoofer output and Y-adapter?Thanks...
I use the line with a Y adapter for the DD .1 + for the LF of the rears.
+ I use the second pair of speaker outputs of my power to feed the sub to aid my mains. But maybe I'll remove the speaker cables when I'll get the SF mains. This is my Audio gear:
Power amp: Audiolab (England) 8000P- connected to the main speakers
Receiver: Yamaha RXV-2095 (The main pre out is connected to the power amp.
+ The R/SR - pre out is connected to the main pre in, in order to get 2 pairs of surr.)
CD: Rotel RCD971 HDCD
DVD: Pioneer DV515
Speakers:Main: 2 Acoustic-Energy A100 (on stands and cones)
Center: 1 Sonus Faber Solo (on cones)
Surr: 2 Mirage OM-R2 omnipolars (hanging on side walls)
2 Wharfedale Delta 30 (on cones at the back)
Sub: 1 Yamaha YST-SM500 (on cones)Cables:
RF/s-video/video/coax/cabels: Monster Silver
Interconnects: Cabeltalk Monitor 2Digital: Monster Lightspeed 100
Speaker cable: Cabeltalk4 (all bi-wired)
Center speaker cable: Cabeltalk Concert 2.1 (bi-wire)
Sub-cable: Monster THX
Sur-cable: MonsterMisc:
Acoustic devices: 4 of Michael Green's Corner Tunes
I ordered for the main speakers Sonus Faber Concerto , I'll get them next month + I'll add in the future a new sub (REL) for the fronts and put the old sub to the rear with speaker cables.

The subwoofer will sum both RCA inputs to mono anyway, so you can use either; you don't have to use both. However, depending on your system, you might get better integration by using the speaker outputs, since with some systems the volume control doesn't work with the subwoofer out correctly. But the high-level (speaker) inputs are more prone to distortion (any amplification distortion will be reproduced and reamplified by the subwoofer's amp).
If you can, experiment with both ways and see what you prefer. But you don't really need the Y adapter. Feel free to put one in if it makes you feel better though. Rat Shack sells 'em for about $2.
