ANyone know when lower price gear with pro logic 2 will hit the shelves? I have been holding off on getting DD for the last year, waiting for prologic 2.
Also- it seems there is a huge gap in the market, where you can't get a HT preamp under $1000. Personally I would love a Yamaha for $600, basically the preamp section from their recievers hopefully with more feature and better build quality. I route the main LR outs through my spectral preamp anyway (for 2 channel with no compromise) as I suspect many high end stereo/tube fans do, so I don't need (and can't afford) a high end HT preamp. (at least right now!)
Follow Ups:
Meridian is the only brand who have released Prologic II to date as far as I know. With most people gunning for AC3 I would be surprised if manufacturers consider PLII a high priority. BTW PLII is good.John
I don't buy things that often, but when I do, I often wait for some new feature. I understand that Outlaw Audio (www.outlawaudio.com) is working on a moderately priced pre/pro around $1K. I have no idea when it will be out, how good it is, or its features. Their two other products are excellent.Features I think ESSENTIAL "right now" in a pre/pro are:
1. Preamp must have at least one input that stays or can be switched to analog only (no digital processing). The Sony 9000ES fails here.
2. Preamp must have 5.1 input for SACD or DVD-A. Again the 9000ES fails.
3. I would want one with 96/24 digital processing.
I own a $2K Rotel 985 DD/DTS/THX pre/pro which sells used around $1,100-$1,200. It does not have PL2, but does have the first two items above. It has 48/24 digital processing.
I own a Sony S9000ES CD/DVD/SACD player. SACD sounds so much better through the analog-only input. CD sounds a little better. I do not have another preamp.
I'm waiting for a PL2, DVD-A decoder, two 5.1 input, 192/24 DD/DTS/THX pre/pro to hit the market. I think I'll be waiting a while. I'm unaware of any pre/pro currently having any of these features. I'll be lucky to find one under $3K within the next 2 years. In the meantime, I spend more than 50% of my time listening to SACDs, and the Rotel does fine with SACD through the 5.1 analog only inputs.
Off the top of my head:Both Rotel and Proton market HT preamp/processors under US$1000.
If you aren't averse to going used, you can pick up products like the Sony TA-E9000ES and the Sherwood-Newcastle AVP-9080R for under US$1000 easily. You might even be able to get the Sherwood for under US$1000 new -- I've not researched the prices of late.
