...I'm currently looking at rear projection sets around 50" in size and want HDTV capabillity. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or suggestions on what to get...I would like to stay *close* to the $2000.00 price range. I'm currently leaning toward the 53FDX01B Hitachi, any observations on it or other similar models? I prefer a tube for the better black reproduction and contrast but find them price prohibative and unavailable in a big enough screen. Also, I like the format of the wide-screens but find them undesirable as well, since they are in reality MUCH smaller when watching a regular format TV show. Thanks in advance for the help...oh, and I DID search the archives for anyone that's concerned. Thanks!

Check out the reviews at audioreview.comI just picked this set up a week ago after doing extensive research on HDTV ready, digital rear projection units, and this one came out the clear winner in terms of features, picture quality with various sources, and maintenance record. PLEASE do yourself the favor of reading those reviews on the Sony. You will see that several Hitachi's and some other makes have had massive recalls. The Sony can be had for about $2400 if you look around a bit, and there are some retailers that let you pay interest free for up to a year on the purchase. Incidentally, my budget was $1500-2K, but when I saw the Sony, and just how incredible it really is, I had to go the extra few hundred. Hope this advice helps a bit.
...I have looked at one Sony ( not sure if it was the KP-53HS10 ) and thought that compared to the Hitachi it was a bit blurry or the focus was weak...I'll check it out again though. Unfortunately it's very hard to judge any of the sets since setup and source material vary so widely. Thanks again!
from the store's demo. The source is often terrible and few sets are adjusted properly.

I DID look at the Sony again this week and I was VERY impressed with it when viewing a HDTV 1080i signal. It looked much better than the Toshiba, Samsung, and RCA ( the other HDTV ready sets they had on display for comparison ). On the regular input the line-doubler on the Sony seemed to be much 'nicer' with fewer artifacts at the expense of maybe being a little bit more soft-focus than the other models; the RCA didn't have a doubler at all so I quickly eliminated it from my list of possibilities. I was REALLY close to purchasing the Sony until I hung around for a while and watched the 1080i picture for quite sometime...then I noticed that EVERY time a black transition or flash of light came on the screen in the picture the Sony would lose the HDTV signal and the green menu display would appear on the screen for a short time. I also noticed some horizontal lines in the top right corner of the screen. I would have assumed it was just a problem with that one display set if it wasn't for the fact BOTH problems appeared on another HDTV ready Sony ( this one was a 60" instead ) and they would lose the signal at the same time, everytime. Out of all the TV's in the store the Sony's were the only ones with the problems I described. Unless I can find out that Sony has fixed the HDTV signal loss problem I'm elimintating them from my 'short-list' of TV's to purchase.
