In Reply to: Sony DVPS-9000ES is it the Holy Grail for A/V ????? posted by audioman on April 11, 2001 at 23:10:56:
I have the S9000ES in my HT system and the SCD-1 in my stereo system. I think, the S9000 is one of the best DVD players on the market regardless of price. Yes, the Ayre, Theta, Camelot, and EAD are a tiny bit better on video than the Sony (their audio capabilities vary), but you'd need a $100,000 front projection system to notice the difference, and these players are anywhere from three to ten times the price of the Sony. The S9000ES is built like a tank and has a 5 year warranty and everything you cound possibly want in a DVD player. CD performance, after about 400 hours of break in, is as good or better than the $1000-$1500 CD players I've heard, and SACD puts CD to shame in almost any machine. I'm not going to say the S9000ES is as good as the SCD-1 in CD or SACD mode, but it gets you a lot of the way there for a fraction of the price. For a dual purpose DVD player, I can't think of a better one than the Sony and for $1100 shipped it's the bargain of the year.
