I've seen the DV88 in action and it is a very nice player. My humble opinion is that there really isn't much difference in video quality from a good japanese dvd player and the Arcam. The real difference comes in the sound department. particularly the cd sound using the analog outs. If you're using the digital outs for cd, then you'd be cutting out the ARCAM's DAC anyway. If this unit is going to be your primary source of music then you should consider the arcam. If however your HT/Audio systems are separate or if you have another quality cd player to use for music, I'd save the money and get a cheaper progressive scan dvd player.just my .02
