While in theory, digital TV transmission is slated to be in operation by 2006, the reality is that the process is stalled. The networks won't invest the capital in equipment needed to transmit the digital signal until more HDTV's are sold, which won't happen until prices drop by another 20%-30%. The exact timeline for this is unclear, so there is a strong chance the deadline for analog transmission will be extended.
