Welcome Jay; Some of the S video cables do appear to be
rather thin. The ones that are supplied with consumer equipment offer the minimum to do the job. They are short enough to allow it. You can get a better cable, like pro JVC, or Sony. They are heavyer and are longer, and more expensive too. If you are seeing hum in your picture, then make sure the cable is not near power, or the portion of a tv/monitor power supply. Noise can also come from the earth ground on an antenna or a satdish, even the cable company. This is a ground loop based on the difference in ground potential from your power company and earth, it can be less than 1/2 volt to cause the problems. Rather than troll for lightning, it is better not to lift the ground on the antenna or dish. Isolaton transformers can help, but are expensive.
