Hello,I'm considering the following DVD players:
Denon DVD-5000
Sony S-7700
Pioneer DV-09I'll be using it as the main picture source AND main cd player as well.
I think thier VDO performance should be identicle (excellent) but
Could anybody comment on the sound quality and ergonomics when listening to CDs?Thanks in advance
Sirot
I have the 5000 and am amazed by it everyday. It could have deeper blacks but the picture clarity and color is the best, I believe, I've seen. It's cd quality is extremely high. I read a review (forgot where) that said you would have to step up to the $10,000 Meridian (cd player)to achieve any improvement over the 5000 in quality. Plus, if you haven't heard a hdcd yet I would HIGHLY recommend it before choosing a player. The new Dire Straits (Brothers)HDCD will blow you away on the 5000. The ability to plug into those Burr Brown DACs is nice too..
Keep you existing CD player, buy the Sony S7700, and use the rest of your money to buy my Chaise Lounge so that you can both listen to your CDs and watch your DVD movies comfortably on it.

The difference between the audio quality of the Denon and Pioneer is marginal, but there are lots of people who swear that the difference is easily heard. I doubt it. But just knowing the fact that the Denon uses 4 (yeah, FOUR) Burr-Brown 1704 DAC chips in a balanced config (but no balanced analog output?) may just make the Denon sound better than the Pioneer by default. And you'll certainly feel better and sleep better at nights (or perhaps even during the daytime) knowing that your DVD/CD player uses the same DAC chips as Mark Levinson No 360S and 30.6.What does your heart tell you? Always do what the heart tells you...Anakin Skywalker does.
I have found that the Pioneer DV-09 had less bass and did not sound as good as a 10 year old JVC or Denon cd player. Keep a CD player for music.
Just because the Denon DVD uses the same chips as Mark Levinson Does NOT mean they will sound the same. There is a lot more to it than the DACs.
but I've evaluated the DV-09 at length in many system configurations with far better digital equipment than what you mention.I found the DV-09 warm balanced in a variety of sytems, as have the professionals who have reviewed it. It does not equal my $4k digital rig, but I find it hard to imagine that most people would agree with your findings.

The staff of Stereo Sound picked the Denon over both the Pioneer and the Sony (tied for second place), particularly commenting on superior sonics.I have no personal experience with any of the three.
I can't comment on the S-7700 although I've heard the earlier Sony units. IMO the Denon is the clear leader for music reproduction. I've demoed the Denon and Pioneer units with my system and I felt that the Denon had a cleaner, broader, and more refined sound than the Pioneer (and I ended up buying the Denon). The Denon has a number of nice features as well including multiple digital and analogue outs that are active at the same time as well as easy ergonomics and a nice remote (backlit). Highly recommended. Reviews from mags that I've seen will, however, give a slight edge to the Pioneer for home theater (picture is slightly sharper according to SGHT). Given my exposure to the older Sony unit, I would conclude that the Denon and Pioneer are in a separate (higher) category for music reproduction.
...I own it, so I'm biased. It is the only player that you mention which provides a digital 24/96 output signal for use with an external 24/96 DAC. Moreover, it has a picture that is second to none and has more flexible controls for picture adjustment than the other players. Its CD sound quality is quite good.
I use it as a transport for the MSB Link DAC. I find the build quality of the 09 slightly better than the 5000. The Pioneer's transport is dead quiet whereas the Denon will make a noticeable whizzing noise (surprising considering the price).Ken.
