***everyone in the know is going this way, only novice will
steer you away, dont listen to them!***No they're not. HTPC has too many drawbacks and is too expensive for 99% of folks.
Follow Ups:
Well, Rich, you know, I think those DVD disks in general are too expensive, and the players too complicated compared with a VCR. The only thing going for DVD players is you don't have to program the time to keep them from blinking 12:00 at you all the time.Besides, recording is too complicated anyway on VCR's,- oops, I guess that's a reason for DVD players.
Let's face it, only people with too much money and time on their hands will bother with large screen or projection TV's, and who cares if HTPC's are cheaper than line doublers- no one needs to be watching progressive scan DVD anyway. If interlaced was good enough for our parents, it should be good enough for you, too.
So get rid of that Color TV, it's also too complicated, too many things to adjust- color, hue, saturation- what do those things mean, anyway? Let's just get a good, simple, reliable black and white TV, something a reasonable size, like 19", with a built in mono speaker (stereo is just an overpriced gimmick, and unnatural) and stick with the fundamentals.
Besides, you're right, who needs a $300 computer anyway- you can pound out letters and memos all day with a typewriter that's much cheaper, and easier to setup and use. No boot disk, no hard drive to crash, and if it's a manual, doesn't even need electricity.
The world is just too complicated for normal people, it's time to simplify and get back to the fundamentals. We have to draw the line somewhere.
