Target and KMart both have some cheap as dirt DVD players on sale for just under $100. They have odd brands like "Apex" and the like. I'm not too demanding when it comes to video. I have no HT set up, my TV is only 19" and about 7 years old with no s-vhs inputs.
I'm not expecting much from something this cheap, but I'd like to know what you might think.
Thanks much,
Dan

...would be for you to buy a Panasonic or Technics DVD-Audio/Video player. The Panasonic A-10, for example, retailed at about $1,200 last year. Now they can be had for around $200. Why? These are brands from the mother campany that is supporting DVD-Audio as the new high-resolution audio format--while Sony supports SACD. In an effort to get hardware into that market that supports DVD-A, they're slashing prices. Understand that these decks are fine DVD-Video players, even if you're not interested in high-rez audio. Brands like those you mention in your post will most likely burn out within a year or two, so how "cheap" is that?
I'll tell you man, if you are at all inclined to modify a player, pick up an Apex DVD-660. It's like $149 AND a $20 rebate at Circuit City! My DV-05 blew up, so I bought this to get by, and now I am keeping it!
Since I modified it, it sounds sweet!, and has an almost 3-D picture! All I did was replace all the plastic standoffs internally with brass ones, and loosen ALL the screws about half a turn so that they just touch the boards. Make sure you put it on spikes too, like 3 on bottom.
Also, take off the feet on the bottom, and just use some spikes touching the metal chassis. Make sure it's level! Brass spikes are better. Check out www.needledoctor.com for some called Molly Toes which are good, and really inexpensive!
You'll be surprised at this cheap player. AND it plays MP3!B
I have the SD-1200, about a year old, and have been very satisfied with the quality of its picture, features (blacker-than-black, zoom, etc.), quietness and reliability. Should be less than $200 unless your state sales tax is absurdly high . . .
