i have just read an article in a hifi magazine about using a computer for a dvd player instead of a dvd player -- i have a Samsung dvd player and a yamaha processor - the article said the computer set up was much better quality the a dvd player --- is this true ??? and can anyone tell me what hardware and software this needs --
Follow Ups:
I first used my computer for DVD. It gave me DVD for a year. It works fine. It is not the same as having a dedicated DVD player. I had to run long wires (which could have degraded the picture or sound). I eventually purchased a normal DVD player... Paul
It's a decent solution --- and a relatively inexpensive scaler to boot. They're noisy. If your equipment is located in the HT room, you might find this to be problematic. With judicious purchasing (PC Power and Cooling makes lower noise Power Supplies, Cases and Fans) you can cut this down some. Also, some of the HTPC vendors already consider this and build appropriately out of the box. 7200 RPM hard drives which are the norm these days are terribly noisy and you don't want to know about 10K RPM drives :-(
They still aren't appliances and can crash from time to time from hardware and software perspectives.
I'm not meaning to sound like I'm discouraging you from this choice, but you need to consider these items and whether you're willing to accept the additional effort required on your part.
Regards,
Unless you havea HD or 480progressive capable display, or front or rear projection, the benefits ofimplementing an HTPC will be minimal or invisible.
If you have a high end display, thenyou will notice the differences in quality.
Stick with your Samsung for now I think, worry about HTPC'swhen you upgrade your display.

A HTPC is be definition a progressive scan player that will produce better picture quality than a non-progressive stand-along player. It also offers flexibility in resolutions that are not typically available without stand-alone video processors. You can also do things like play DVDs from any region (with many drives) and skip over FBI warnings which you cant do from most home players.Basically you need a decent PC with a DVD drive; it will come with DVD playback software, and then you can get a basic setup working. If you want progressive scan out to your TV you'll need a digital set and probably a VGA to component converter.
Once you get the basics, there are lots of SW packages that may or may not be better suited for your needs. I'd suggest visiting www.avsforum.com and going to their HTPC forum. You can get all the info you need (and then some) there.
