I have a question similar to some others that have posted to the Video Asylum. I read those postings. However, my question is slightly different.I have a pre amp (Musical Fidelity A3CR) and a power amp (MF A3CR) and I am buying a low-end surround receiver (Onkyo DTR-6) that does not have any amp-in inputs. I would like my CD Player, Cassette Deck, Turntable and Tuner to go directly through the pre and the power amplifiers without being routed through the Receiver. However, I would like the DVD player to be routed through the receiver. One thing that one of the dealers suggested is to connect the DVD player to the receiver (through the optical connections) and then connecting the receiver's tape-out to one of the line in connections of the pre amp. Then the two main speakers will be driven by the pre and power amps and the other three speakers will be connected directly to the receiver. My question is will I get DTS or Dolby Digital decoding if the pre amp and power amps are connected to the receiver by the receiver's tape-out connection and the receiver is driving the other three speakers?
I apologize for a question that has been discussed in this forum before in different forms.

Does the Musical Fidelity preamp have a "processor loop", sometimes called a bypass input?If it does, plug the receievers preamp output into this input.
If the preamp doesn't this can still be done, you just have to know the simple rule. ALWAYS use the same volume level on whatever input the receiver is plugged into.
This should work nicely for you.

Kotches,Thanks for your reply. The A3CR does not have a processor loop that I could detect. I have attached a link to the Webpage with two pictures of the preamp. You can click on the lower picture to see an enlarged picture of the connections it has. It does have a tape loop. You are not talking about that, are you?
Assuming that it does not have the processor loop what do you suggest? I did not understand your statement: "ALWAYS use the same volume level on whatever input the receiver is plugged into. " Are you suggesting that I put the receiver at a certain setting and then control the volume with the pre-amp? Please explain.

What kotches was indicating was to do this:DTR-6 Receiver L&R preamp outputs -> A3CR preamp -> power amp
Your DVD player would get connected to the receiver. The L&R preamp outputs from the DTR-6 gets connected to an available input (such as the AUX) on the A3CR preamp. The A3CR gets connected to the external power amp. When you want to listen to a 2 channel source, use the A3CR and leave the DTR-6 off. When you want to do HT turn on the DTR-6 and select the AUX input on the A3CR. If the A3CR does not have a process loop then you will have to pick a fixed volume position on the A3CR for calibrartion and usage during HT. The volume would still be controlled by the DTR-6 for HT.

I understand exactly what you are saying and what Kotches meant in his post. However, my question is, would not connecting the pre-out of the receiver to the Aux in of the A3CR preamp mean boosting the signal twice(once by the receiver's preamp stage and again by the A3CR pre)? The pre-out on the receiver has an output level of 1 V (Impedance 470 ohms), whereas the Input sensitivity of the A3CR pre-amp is around 200 mV (Impedance 50 kohms). If the only implication of this approach is that you have to reduce the volume level to compensate for the double boosting then it is not a problem at all.
The preamp dealer suggested connecting the receiver's tape out connections to the preamp's Aux in connection. This seems fine because the tape-out has an output voltage of 200 mV, equivalent to the preamp's output level of 200 mV. However, one concern I have with this tape-out approach is that all the signal from the receiver may be channeled through the tape-out connection and that I may not get the surround effects.
I appreciate the posts you made. At least I know that I can use the DTR-6 with my stereo system. For a few days I was afraid that I would have to sell the unit and buy a better one that has an amp-in input (such as Onkyo Integra DTR-7 or better). I would really appreciate a clarification of this pre-out versus tape-out issue.

No. There's no way to trim the volume controls to calibrate via the tape loop output.Regards,
