Unfortunately, LD was desinged for 4:3 display devices even though the movie maybe letterboxed. The exception to this is squeeze (anamorphic) import LD movies which were specifically designed for the 16:9 displays.

Your LD player has no setting that will allow movies to be displayed properly on 16:9 displays. I use the Pioneer HLD-X9 LD player with my Loewe Aconda 16:9 HD-TV. I adjust the aspect ratio on my TV to compensate for LD movies.
