I'm trying to help my son hook up a home theater system and I have a question relative to the placement of the subwoofer. I realize that the subwoofer is not a directional transducer but can it be positioned behind the listening position as opposed to in front. He has a small child and would like to put it behind the couch so that the child doesn't climb on it.Will the sound be compromised by this placement. Any help would be appreciated.

The last poster indicates the proper method to locate the sub, but if necessary (and assuming you cross over at 80Hz or under 4th order), behind the couch should be just fine.
Can't say, we know nothing about your room. The rule of thumb is to place the sub at the seated position and walk around the room to find best sound effect when the sub is turned on. Once found, that is where the sub should be positioned. However, sometimes you just have to put the sub where it will be most conveniant and run with it, in which case you might need some bass traps in the corner (which I still tend to recomend anyway) so the corners are not overwhelmed if there is a chair placed at that location.I know others here at the asylum will offer some additional information that will prove to be helpful.
