i have a rather large full range ctr chan speaker. the problem is that i have way too much bass from this speaker coming into my smallish listening room. using the bass mgmt fr my processor really doesnt help much. besides a single chan. equalizer, does anybody have any ideas? a high pass filter perhaps? thanks.
Follow Ups:
Put a good quality non polar cap in series with the positive
side of the speaker
If its 8ohms try 220mfd
:)
This will give you like 6db rolloff below 160hz or so
:)
Two items:1) Is the speaker located on the centerline (left to right) of the room? If so, bass room mode reinforcement is at a maximum. Try moving slightly to one side or the other.
2) Is the speaker on a shelf in an entertainment center?
Try changing the setting in your processor to "small" then the lower frequencies will not be sent to the speaker.
Why not try disconnecting the woofer from circuit inside the speaker? If that is too drastic get a cheap Marchand active crossover, but be careful you select the correct (meaning the most effective for your purposes) crossover frequency. That aside are sure it is not a room/speaker positioning problem? If it is a boomy/resonance then double check the speaker by moving it to a different room and test it with different electronics. The problem might also lie in the amp or, less likely, the processor.
Just a few ideas. Let us know what you discover and we might be able to give better help.

thanks for the advice.....i really dont have too many options as far as positioning the ctr. speaker. it is a polk cs350, w. four mid woofers. its really a pretty good speaker, but i think it might be a little bit of overkill in my small room. i have stuffed the front ports and it helps a bit. how about more stuffing to tighten it up?

... could make the problem worse by raising the resonant frequency of the cabinet. Port design usually smooths out low frequency resonances and the stuffing etc is rather critical.I still suspect your basic problem is one of room resonances. Removing the bass driver out of circuit might assist but I guess it is unlikely to bring about a satisfactory cure. You look like being faced with tube traps and other room devices, something I'm unfamiliar with. Try a post on the speaker board for further help. I empathise with your fruustration. Wooly resonant overprominant bass is hard to the ears and is unfortunately too prevalent in commercial theatres. We certainly do not want it at home!

My little decoder has an option for the center speaker to be full band, or narrow band. Do you have a setting like that as a menu option?
