I have a 2ch tube system and love listening to music. I live in a small house so my stereo and TV are in the same room. I want to add a surround sound system using my current system as the 2 front chanels.I've been trying to research this and I think I have learned a few things. I could use more advice.
I think I need to buy a processor then connect the pre out on the processor to tape 2 on the tube pre-amp. Then run the remaining speakers off of the HT processor. I wonder if I can get an HT processor pre-amp would mean I'd need another amp too - I have a 5Ch solid state amp that I could try to work into this.
Any recommendations for a processor. I should mention I'm on a tight budget. I don't expect to buy anything new rather I hope to find a deal on the net. I'm looking for something at or below $500. I would like it to have the latest digital technology with the new dolby surround but I realize with my budget I will probably have to compromise.
Any advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the same situation- I have a Dynaco PAS-4 tube preamp with an external processor loop. I bought a Yamaha DSP-E492 prologic processor w/a 3 channel amp that has 5.1 inputs, and a Pioneer 626 DVD player that has built in Dolby Digital/DTS decoders. Add the center channel and surrounds, and you are set. I've seen new DSP-E492's for sale on Ebay for around $150.Ken
And went with an outlaw 1050 receiver (i needed tha mps for the rears)
Works fine, certainly less transparent than my 2 channel set-up, but such is life.
The Outlaw sells new for $500 and used for $400 I think.

I have a DVD player and VCR - the dvd player is a toshiba SD2200 with outputs for the new dolby surround. I have also decided to sign up for Direct TV - don't have it yet but I like the direct tv + tivo combo and would like to get it.
Hi,
this is my thought on the subject. You can get a good video switch box for $400-500 (Entech makes a nice one), and you can run the
audio straight to the stereo.....and leave it at that. If you have tons of money, you can consider multichannel; but using tubes adds considerably to the equation. *Most* of the sound in surround comes from the center channel speaker....a big difference in sound quality
will be quite noticeable. If you were just a HT fanatic asking me what the 2 most important speakers to spend $$$ on, i would say the CC and the sub. The surrounds play a supporting role. I am sure you see the problem, the processor, at least a tube amp for the CC speaker (the rears will be fine with SS), a really nice CC speaker...it adds up to serious bucks.
Or...you can just get that video switcher, and possibly a clean audio switcher if you run out of inputs on the stereo preamp.
