I am pulling my hair out researching Pre/Pros... Those that I am looking at and would appreciate feedback on the pluses/minuses are:Classe SSP 25 or SSP 50
Anthem AVM 2
Sunfire Theatre Grand 2
Theta Casa Nova
And any others you might suggest.. The thing I am balancing is second zone (the house is wired for whole house audio). I am a 2 channel enthusiast and do not want to compromise the 2 channel experience any more than absolutely required. Would like some of the bells/whistles but could live without them....My main questions are on sound quality, picture quality, and ease of use... Any help would be appreciated.
Follow Ups:
I have a California Audio labs system. It has great two channel that is as good as many two channel only Pre's. I also have the amp and dvd player. The system is extremely easy to use. If you push open on the dvd player, it turns on the entire system to a preset volume level and selects the proper amount of channels for each source you select on the Pre. All you have to do is hit play, and the system is on and running . It so easy to use that anyone can operate it. My wife who doesn't care much for audio gear loves the easy of operation. All she has to do is load a cd and sit down. Also the system will send audio to a second zone and with the video switcher, video as well. If you have a projector with electric screen, it can be set to automatically lower the screen when you hit dvd on the remote. You find the SSP-2500 on the internet for a little less than 4000.00 If you look at the feature list on the SSP,you will see that it is short. You don't get a lot of bells and whistles because Cal invested in the sound quality first, features second.
I'd take Anthem off the list and replace it with the B&K Reference 30. It's a great unit, except for the slow-to-upgrade company who builds it.I've read a lot of good things about the Tag McLaren too, although it may be out of your price range.
ADo you have analog sources? What about 5.1 analog sources? If these are concerns stick with processors that have these features.
Consider a couple you didn't name as possibilities as well:
Bryston SP-1
Integra Research RDC-7
Cary Audio P-7Hope this helps, and good luck in your quest.
Regards,
I also have a B&K Reference 30 and I'd suggest you add it to your list. Great all around performance. Home theater mag (on newsstands now) just came out w/ a pretty glowing review, and there are a couple of web-based reviews (links to the reviews) at ecoustics.com under "preamps" (done by audiorevolution.com and secrets of home theater and high fidelty.com).I think the absolute sound reviewed the Classe and it sounded really nice. Best of luck.
hi,
leave the stereo as it is.... Wrap the theater around it, all you need do is run an ic to the stereo from the pre/pro. You will learn to
set the level by ear quickly. It's hard to beat the B+K, they offer good value, it's what i have. But then, i don't have any experience
with the others. It never gets any yak, but the Mac pre/pro has great sound.
