If I were to hook up the following...1. a standard issue DVD player
2. a nice enough TV screen
3. inside a post-war stucco house (wire mesh throughout walls)
4. no antenna, cable, satellite, etc....would it then be possible to essentially have a movies-only setup?
Thx in advance

Yes, definitely. One small suggestion, though. Unless money is too much of an issue, get a TV which will drive external speakers; or an integrated amp or receiver so you can drive speakers. Then get some speakers - obviously! sorry:> - and place them in a triangle, with you as the third point (i.e. on either side of the TV somewhere; but a ways away from the TV for more stereo effect). This will, I believe, enhance your enjoyment.
Even with a built in tuner in your VCR, nobody can force you to actually watch the tv broadcasts, right?? :)Thom
... I am constantly struggling against my TV-fixated 1970s childhood.I really do hate television, but when it's on, I become zombified and end up watching it for hours on end, even tho I have multiple other, more brain-friendly options for entertainment at hand (music, books, conversation, pets, etc.).
I'm pathetic, I know.
Does anyone else share this affliction, coupled with a strong appreciation of cinema?

Actually, I omitted reference to any amp and speaker combo because I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to create a TV broadcast-free setup without getting into side discussions of stereo v. surround...So, stereo/surround aside, is it possible to set up a system that is fully immune from that wasteland known as TV?
In other words, if one has a TV, DVD, some sort of amp/speaker combo, and *no* antenna, cable, sat, etc., can this be a movies-only thing?
I'm assuming that DVD players do not have any receiver capabilities, unlike traditional VCRs.
Yes and yes. Good luck. I'm a little like you with the TV thing. I try (with little luck many times) to avoid it.

Why just the dvd? A lot of movies can be rented on tape, but not dvd,
a vcr is pretty much a neccesity. Mine is a SuperVHS vcr, and i prefer that type, they usually work better, even on rented tape. Second, even with the vcr, there is actually some good stuff on tv, concerts, old movies, the news announcement that WW3 has just started....
You don't mention the audio portion. Start with the DVD and enjoy, but sonner or later you'll want to experience 6 or 7 channel sound and you can still do it inexpensively these days.2 main speakers (good quality monitors will do.
2 surround (lesser quality ones laying around will do nicely)
1 center (spend a little here, this needs to be full range)
1 powered subwoofer (spend as much as you want since a lot of effect is here)
1 receiver with Dolby Digital 5.1 (needs 5 amps)Enjoy!
... you certainly would be able to watch DVDs on this setup. Obviously, you would not get surround sound from the tv speakers, but IMO this is by no means necessary in order to get a decent movie watching experience at home.
If you have the possibility of using an existing 2-channel system for stereo sound you can most likely improve the sound as compared to the tv speakers. Still no surround, and if you or other members of the audience is not seated exactly between the 2 speakers, you may miss the center channel (for locating dialogue correctly etc.)Hope this helps :)
