In Reply to: Has anyone heard the new Anthem AVS 20 processor?? posted by Lotus M50 on September 14, 2001 at 15:30:35:
This processor basically sucks for music and is ok for ht. Not even in the same league as the other processors you mention (and I usually hate it when people make these kind of statements - in this case it turns out to be true).

C'mon chrisc,Most all home theatre processors suck for music unless they have an analog pass through. I have personal experience with Lexicon and although it did a creditable job on movies it was simply unlistenable for music. This was five years ago with the Lex. Maybe they are better now.

Boy, is that ever the case. Since I don't want to have two separate systems, I have to buy a surround processor that has one. Only the B&K Ref 30, Bryston SP-1 and one other have it (maybe two others, but these are the two I'm most interested in and I can't remember what models they are).A lot of the processors I've auditioned sound great for movies, but just don't cut it for music. Even some of the really high-end ones like Classe and Proceed. One of these posts mentioned the Lexicon. That was a real surprise for me. The DC-2 was unlistenable for 2-channel audio. It is a few years old, but their new models are creeping up on $10k.
Try the Cal Audio SSP 2500. I demoed them all, I found it to the best on 2 channel music and movies. A lot of people overlook it and focus on some of the bigger names, but it should definitely be ranked as one of the top pre/pro's.
