stopped by Soundex today and saw a Sony plasma screen running some kind of animated dinasoar film. my son (5) sat on the leather sofa, transfixed, mouth open (me too!)it was a window flat on the wall...and it was...wow!
the sales guy suggested that he could "make me an offer" (>$8k)
god...I mean, Satan, get behind me!
anyone give me links to research these things?
Cheeze and Rice! they are awesome!
i'm probably going to have to buy one in the next few months, because when it comes to very high tech, i'm such an easy mark.
the sales guy says Pie-in-ear is about to release a "next-generation" plasma screen in a month or so.
sorry, i haven't been following the dialog on this site.
anyone clue me in?
Follow Ups:
I don't know why I do that to myself.I won't go in there again.
I'm still remembering when I had a 13" black and white TV and dreamed of a color 19" with remote! God!
I just love high-tech gadgets
When I was a teenager I used to go through the J.C. Whitney catalog and circle all the VW hot-rod parts and fantasize about sooping-up my Dad's V-dubya to around 10,000 hp (if you added up all the % horsepower increases in the advetisements that's about what you'd get)
I grew out of it
(no, I just found other things to get foaming nuts about)
Setup and source material is everything. I've seen the 40" Sony and apprently know one knows how to set it up correctly. Since its almost 300 pounds, anyone buying it should require the store to get it set up by a tech accredited to the AVP professionals. This way you will quickly know whether its the technical problem with the set or the source material. Would be interested in hearing from someone who has it and has had it set up correctly.
"Since its almost 300 pounds"the one I was watching was closer to 65 pounds, and was just like looking out a picture window--flat against the wall.
it was so cool
I'll tell you how cool it was,...I'm thinking of selling all my stereo gear...that, is cool.

In the Krell/Faroudja room they were showing it on a ~8 foot screen from a CRT projector in 1080 Progressive!!!!! Oh my god it looked sooooooooooo gooood. It was stunning.
... to check picture quality with "real" pictures - not just animated computer graphics. I was totally astonished by a Loewe Plasma screen (forget model name) showing Toy Story - and later, when I saw a normal photographed movie, I found that the plasma is not yet near ordinary (good) tv technology.Of course, the flat screen is way cool!
Best,
Thom
Hi,
went into a Tweeters (that's a audio/video chain up here) a few eeks ago and could not believe my eyes. They had a FIFTY inch Marantz plasma tv that was just astonishing. The price was even more astonishing than the picture, with a MSRP of $20K. The Pioneer Elite
and Sony XBR RPTVs are not quite as nice, but beautiful all the same, for a fourth the money. Sony has come out with a 40 inch tube tv, and I would love to have that one too. This is not much different from stereo, in that there are very different flavors, all quite a ways from perfection, but lovely for all of that. Chexk out the 40" Sony tube job, gotta love tubes :)
yes and Pioneer, NEC, and Runco are coming out with a SIXTY ONE inch plasma that will make us look even more clueless and broke, LOL.
