I bought a Marantz SR7200, a week ago on line. While turning up the volume last week, FLAMES and SPARKS came out of the bottom, and the receiver shut down. While the unit is being replaced, I was curious if anyone else ever heard of anything like this. Anyone? Thanks.

Thanks for the responses. I've had a Marantz sr680, cd player, and cd recorder for years, so I really don't think it is the brand, either. However, one of my students said the same thing happened to her dad's reciever when she turned up the volume. Apparently (she's not sure) her dad's receiver was a SR14 ex (the gold one). Anyway, it is a frustrating deal, but I'm hoping the replacement will do the trick. Thanks for your help, and I wish the last poster luck with his problem.
Wow, this sounds like something out of the 70's. I have an old issue of The Absolute Sound where they talk about this happening to some kind of amp. I think it was a Marantz, but I could be wrong. Cause was a bad batch of capacitors. My Marantz AV-9000 (2nd sample) makes occasional clicking noises and has shut itself once but has not blown up yet. Don't get too pissed at Marantz, though; even the best brands are not perfect. There are an awful lot of components inside these things.Todd
Wow. I owned the Marantz SR-8000 for about 8 months and the Marantz AV-9000 for about 9 months and I had no problems with either of them. I guess the more you sell, the more likely you run into problems.Michael
I'm on my second 7200, and this one is jank too! I hear of S-video problems, but I wouldn't know. I am having problems with popping noises coming from my speakers. It happens using digital inputs between tracks on CD's, when I select tracks, at the end of the CD, when I turn the volume all the way down, when I track through DVD's, between menus and such, and when I hit pause or play! I did so much research and thought that I had fallen in love with the Marantz("because music matters"). The 6200 loaner they gave me had no such symptoms. It lacks a couple of options and doesn't have as good of DAC or remote though. Am I supposed to get a Denon 3802? I am so pissed off. I went through 10 faulty Sony Wega's before realizing that they ALL have problems. I do not want to go through the same ordeal. Please tell me if you have the same problems with yours. Thanks and good luck!!!
Hey!A guy posted to audioreview.com about this problem, rumored to be a faulty mute circuit (evidently something Marantz put in there so you wouldn't have to listen to noise between the tracks on analogue recordings.
Supposedly it only happens when you are using a digital connection (analog is ok), and only on analog recorded material, i.e. on AAD, but not DDD.
I haven't heard if Marantz is looking into the problem or not.
Hope that helps!
Clarke
I've had my marantz sr5000 for a few years and have never had a problem. I'm looking into getting a newer receiver and was looking into the 7200. This is the first time I've heard of anyone having multiple problems with a marantz product.
