I have decided to get a pre/pro for my set up. I was going to get a pre and then work somethin out...Question: If music reproduction was your priroity, What is the best processor for 2 channel music while giving me the movie bells and whistles when I want? ( I can make scarfices in the movie side)
B&K is out, had the Ref 20, good movie, bad music..
Proceed pretty darn good..I think I can save some money (?)
Bryston, looks good on paper, sorta like a BP25 plus...never heard though...(I think if I listen to this I might like it)
Any others? Can any one link me to a previour thread???
Follow Ups:
I own a Bryston SP-1, and think it is an outstanding unit. The 2-channel audio quality alone is as good as some preamps I've heard costing $4k or more, and when you add surround decoding that is also first-rate, you have a great value (I have a problem calling any piece of gear that sells for nearly $4k a "bargain", but this may be one of the exceptions). The SP-1 lacks some features that you may want or need, however, such as video switching and a tuner, but it has (as you note) an analog by-pass circuit derived from the BP-25 preamp. I did a more lengthy review of my SP-1 which is posted on AudioReviews, so you may want to look there. I think that the Bryston SP-1 provides one of the few good, 1-box solutions for someone who demands high-quality audio reproduction but also wants a good HT processor. To do better, you'll have to spend a lot more money.
The Proceed is a very good piece but will still pale in comparison to a dedicated 2 channel preamp. I use a Proceed AVP and I think it is great for HT. In my experience, HT preamp/processors could never do as good a job for music as a dedicated 2 channel preamp. This includes the highly praised Meridian 861.
It seems I need a processor loop on my future preamp...This in not a very common feature, correct??Thanks, jb
There is no reason you need a processor loop.
Any stand alone 2 channel audio pre can be used.
In my set-up (with similar goals & priorities to yours) I use an Outlaw 1050 for HT, which sends the pre amp output to a Foreplay.
I also run a CDP direct to the Foreplay. Not having a processor loop makes channel balancing a little more difficult, but not impossible.
I use 2 channel for HT mostly so it becomes irrelevant for me.
If you've done your research, then you know the Proceed
was King of Hill in its time and was only recently overtaken
by a "limited" few processors who have gone all out with newer
dacs. The Proceed has a hardware and software upgrade coming
soon which will put it back over the top I believe with all the
bells and whistles again. Yes, I own one so I am bias. If you
can pick up one of these on the used market, you won't be
dissapointed, even without the upgrade, especially for the price
I've seen them going for.

You could get a cheap processor for movies and a high end preamp for music and run your front two channels via the high end preamp when watching movies. On my setup, I do this. I have a passive and set the volume control to vertical (12:00 position) for movies. For music, no HT stuff is in the loop. My passive, an FT Audio LW1 was about $500, my Sony-ES SSP was about $700 in it's day (discontinued). I was thinking like you are about getting both in one box...it would have cost thousands more.I believe my current setup is the best of both worlds...and cost effective.
