I just got my Sony 40XBR700 delivered over the weekend. It is huge, and very deep (over 26"), so be carefull to be sure you have the room. I was wondering if there would be any video degredation by passing the Y-PB-PR outputs from my progressive scan DVD, and the Y-PB-PR output from my HDTV ready Cable Box (Orlando, FL area has 2 network HD channels and 1 HD Showtime and 1 HD HBO, and TWC just released the HD capable boxes) through the component inputs of my Yamaha AV receiver, then back out to the Y-PB-PR inputs on the TV? Also, I have read that Sony TV's are notorius for needing video calibration. Who do I contact to have this done (certainly Circuit City wont do it, although they sold me the set for $3099, well below retail, and free, quick delivery!). Although I am no videophile, I am overwhelmed with the quality of the picture. In my opinion, you get more picture on the 40 in wide screen mode than you do on the 36" 16:9 Sony, for less money...
Follow Ups:
I bought a KV-36XBR450 about three months ago. A few days later I saw a story about the new 40-inch Sony's. I love the 36-inch. It is the best picture I have every seen. And I have seen many fine TV's. I would have gotten the 40-inch if it were available. If the picture is close to the 36-inch (and I assume it is just as good), you have a great TV. My Sony was perfect when I got it and it has not been adjusted since.
We had a large projection TV and I had a hard time deciding on the smaller screen size. Ultimately, the picture quality won. The 40-inch would have been an easy choice.
If you need ISF techs, get in touch with the folks at Absolute Sound in Winter Park. They are one of your best bets for the greater Orlando area. Been in business for years and have a solid reputation.Their website (absolutesound.com) will give you more detailed info info.
The people you are looking for to calibrate your set are ISF Technicians. You should wait a few months to get this done so your TV can settle down.
Here is an excellent resource on the subject:

Thanks for the lead on ISF Techs!

I still cannot make my mind up on this set. When I saw it demo'd at J&R in New York by Sony tech's no less, it was a disaster. Fiddle, fiddle they did and they could not get it to match the Sony 16:9 that was sitting right next to it. They said, with proper set up, it would be fine. The sony tech's didn't have a clue who could do this. Amazing. So, I'm still looking for a store that will provide the set up by professionals, coupled with a 'you take' it back for a full cash refund if I don't like it. I'm here in New Jersey and no one wants to sell me one on those conditions even if I pay list. Just getting it delivered and pick up they all seem to say is a problem. I too plan to build it into a custom cabinet and have all the silver trim painted black. Sony must have their head in the sand when they felt a two tone unit would be great. All HT pros tell me that the background against which a set is shown against makes a big difference. The WF/SO is important for this hugh box.
Welcome to the club. I had my Sony 40XBR700 delivered a few weeks ago. The two giants that delivered the set had a very difficult time lifting it in place. By the way, to those considering purchasing this set, it is very heavy and large. I reinforced my entertainment center. Also, I connected all the inputs before they pushed the set in place. No kidding you won't be able to move this set by yourself. I paid $3300. Picture is great. When plasma gets better and cheaper, I will consider a 60 plasma. For now, this Sony set gives a large crisp picture no black bars. Hey, I like it. My only negative comment is that I believe that the subwoofer is at the back of the set??? Since my set is totally enclosed by the entertainment center, I have lowered the bass to zero to avoid too much boom boom. How about you?
I have connected all my video direct bypassing my processor. Currently have the Pioneer DV09 player waiting for a great progressive scan player to arrive on the scene. The 900ES is about to be upgraded.
I too have mine in an entertainment center type enclosure with about 1" to spare on each side. I looks great (except for the silver trim), but like you say, the bass is "boomy", and tends to rattle nick nacks all over my entertainment center. I have mostly used it through my AV amp and my surround system, so it is not much of a problem... I bought the Panasonic DVDRP56 progressivs scan DVD, and am pleased with the output. Again, I am not a videophile, and the only other option was a Sony progressive scan model, but I hated the silver color (all of my other components are black). A silly reason to make a decision, but I probably couldn't tell the difference in quality, if any, anywany!
