If it matters to you, the Panny RP56 only has toslink output, and neither the RP56 nor Sony NS700 have a zoom mode (which I admit I have used on "certain" movies on my ancient Tosh 5109).Check out the other HT forums if you haven't already:

HometheatertalkIf I was going to buy today, I'd seriously consider the JVC 6x series (65 or 75 depending on color I think?), everyone seems to love it, and those that have compared it directly with the Sony and Panny like the JVC picture more. Plus it has zoom! You can find it for around $200.
Only toslink - I checked the panny website and you're right, that's a problem. The phillips q50at got top reviews.Tos and coax output.
Has anyone checked out the phillips???
BTW do these have analog L/R audio outputs? Thanks for that catch,
Mitch
I've been driving myself nutz there are definitely 3 to choose from the Panny, JVCXSV60-65 or sony 700. I have read that about people who have purchase them all and the clear winner for picture is JVC, I think it has one of the "bugs" maybe chroma? I'll check the benchmark below as it also gives info regarding what chipset it uses.
The amount of info is enough to choke on!!
Thanks for pointing it out again. Time to rethink it. Or just purchase all three.
I do know that the Panny is one of the VERY few under a grand that has the chipset w/o any bugs!
BTW check out the really bad response about DVD-R. They don't record the digital audio stuff. IT seems everyone on these sites is going for the JVC 3000 D-VHS.....www.avsforum.com

Look here.
Thanks I just saw it. Amazing - Ell cheapo wins the Panny rp56.
Plan to buy it this week. Glad this process is finally complete. Thanks for the site

No problem. I have the 91 and would have went with the 56 if I hadn't jumped-the-gun. Even so, the 91 is very nice with top Nordost component cables. And best of all, no worries about the dreaded chroma bug.-- Greg
Greg,How do you like the 91???
Have you compared it to the 56? I know they have different chips, and it's built like a tank!
Mitch
Well, the 91 is ANYTHING but a tank. It's very light in weight and has a small box compared to my Sony 7000. I'd call it, wimpy. Performance-wise, it's quite good. Excellent picture. I imagine the 56 is better in video. I don't use the DVD-Audio function.-- Greg
Hi Greg,
Much to your surprise, the panny rp91 is a killing all in it's range and more. The 56 does not have digital coax out.
Here are some comparitive reviews. While they appear to be the same, the 56 is cutting costs in several areas making the 91 a no brainer. Congrats. No buyers remorse here.
The DVD-A has remastering capabilities.
Thanks for pointing me there.
Regards,
Mitch
BTW what are they going for thes days?
Missed the coax out not being on the 56 - that's a must have for me. Enjoy!-- Greg
I am pretty comfortable with it.
That got pretty good reviews. The top 3 were this one, JVC and Panny.
I just checked it out.
Thank You ,
Mitch
Perhaps something closer to the price of the sd4700 around 2-300bucks!
THanks,
Mitch
There was a rave review in the last Perfect Vision of an inexpensive Sony progressive scan player in your price range.Todd
Sony DVP-S9000ES.... and does SACD
> Sony DVP-S9000ES.... and does SACDThis player blurs video much more than other players. A comparable Toshiba presented video much better. If you buy the 9000ES without auditioning, you may be disappointed with the picture. I know I was.
Have you seen the shootout?
THanks for the caution...
Mitch
