This maybe a dumb question, but here it goes: It is generally possible for a DVD player to decode DD signal and output it as PCM for an external DAC. Does the same holds true in case of DTS signal? Can a DVD player with internal DTS decoder output PCM digital signal decoded from DTS? Or is it limited only to DD signal?I have a separate setup using a DVD player with an external DAC. I'm considering getting a new DVD that has built-in DTS decoder. In this case, will I be able to hear DTS track out of my external DAC, or must I use the analogue 6 outputs of the DVD player to hear DTS?
Many thanks.
Follow Ups:
This will take either DD or DTS and turn each channel into PCM. It will output 3 digital signals (L/R, LS/RS, S/C) that a stereo DA converter can process (ie; you need 3 DACs).
"It is generally possible for a DVD player to decode DD signal and output it as PCM for an external DAC. Does the same holds true in case of DTS signal?"I don't believe the DVD players can do this. It general, DD can be downmixed to PCM on the digital output by the DVD players themselves (as you mentioned), but DTS can not. Your only solution is hope that the DTS DVD in question also has a PCM output option in it's menu (i.e. The Eagle's "Hell Freezes Over" DTS DVD also has a PCM track).

Problem solved! I just picked up a new SONY NS500V DVD player that has built-in DTS decoder. In its config menu, it has options for BOTH DD and DTS conversion to PCM digital output! You can select whether to digitally output DD and DTS as they are or convert them into PCM. Since I don't have a PCM DAC right now, I can't test it. But when I get my Kora Hermes next week, it will be very interesting. :)
Perhaps my wording wasn't clear. The DAC I am referring to here is not an AV receiver DAC that's capable of DD/DTS decoding, but a regular PCM only DACs. I had PT P3A and am looking at Kora Hermes 24/192. Since these are PCM only DACs, I was wondering if a DVD player would convert DTS to PCM through its digital output. Thanks.
Since they can convert DD to PCM, you would think they could do the same with DTS, but I have not tried it, as I have zero DTS DVDs (I do have one DTS CD and a couple DTS LDs, I think). Regardless of whether or not it works or not, however, you are far better off running your DD or DTS signal into the appropriate decoder in a receiver or preamp/processor.Before I got my Marantz AV-9000, I had my Pioneer DV-414 configured to output PCM to utilize the sole digital input on my old Onkyo 909 receiver. There was a drastic improvement in sound quality when I got the Marantz and was able to run straight Dolby Digital. DVD players apparently do a relatively mediocre job of constructing a PCM signal out of a DD one, and really, this does not seem that surprising when you consider the nature of what is involved.

Your DVD player will output DD via its digital interface (coax/optical). The same is true for DTS provided that your DVD player supports DTS. On board DTS decoding is not necessary if you use the digital interface. Although, it has no effect on the digital output if the unit does have it.Of course, using the digital interface requires that your external DAC or AV receiver supports DD/DTS decoding. Otherwise the 6 analog outputs must be used.
Personally, I use my AV receiver for DD/DTS decoding.
