I just bought the new and very expensive Tributaries
TriVideo component video cable ($250) and I was very
disappointed that it was not nearly as sharp as my cheap
Monster Video 3 component video cable. The color
saturation on the TriVideo was better, but the Monster
gave a much sharper and more 3D picture. I compared
back and forth several times and every time the Monster
was much sharper. What gives?

This sounds very, very odd, as Tributaries makes some of the most highly regarded video cables on the market. I upgraded from some inexpensive Monsters to 2 meters of SCVC ($300), and the difference was astonishing. Everything got better; if I had to put a number on improvement, I'd say 15%. I'd return them and get another set, as something is clearly wrong.
Could be capacitance or resistance of the cable you are using. You might check the specs of the Monster cable you like and find one with similar specs. I have the Tributaries Delta and it's really amazing, so I'm not sure what's going on with your system. There is also a chance that your Monster cable is not letting all the signal get through..... Cables really do act like components, and sometimes require you to change settings on your tv/vcr/etc. Personally, the SVHS input on my stupid tv really messes up the signal: bad color, mushy darks, etc. I use the Tributaries on the composite input and voila! A beautiful picture.Tweak it, dude! Make it work!

Return the Tributaries cables, use the MV3 as a reference cable set and try another brand. For a fraction of that price you could buy belden 1694a cables from http://www.Rhinocables.com
