I'm considering buying a Sony 9000 dvd player, but not to use in the conventional way. First, I was going to exploit it's SACD playability; secondly, I was going to use it for headphones while watching movies. I do not have a receiver or processor that decodes Dolby Digital or DTS. So would I be able to hook the analog outputs
on the back of the 9000 to my headphone amp and enjoy sound that way, and run an analog cable to the back of my TV for the video? I watch movies very rarely, and when I do, I can't enjoy the movie at high volume due to neighbors (live in apt). So I'd use my headphones/headphone amp setup. Since I don't want to buy a dedicated
high-end SACD player, I'd want to save some money and try to kill two bats with one bottle rocket. I just didn't know what the drawbacks would be if I didn't have anything to "decode" the Dolby Digital or DTS.Thanks for your help.

Thought I'd add a postscript.I purchased by phone and plastic my 9000ES from
http://www.oade.com/
1150.00 usd
no tax, shipping incl to California.
My 9000es out of the box surpassed my Theil CD/DAC and BOBWIRE's modified Samsung (now retired). BOBWIRE purchased a 9000es.
The 9000ES has a pair of analog jacks.
Use one set for HP amp, the other for the TV.
SACD, CD, DVD playback is ok.
Stereo only if Multichannel SACD.Beware DTS.
A loud noise (sounds like old TV or FM radio interchannel hiss) emerges from the analog at a fixed level.DTS sound is intended to be externally decoded. Look for this in your HT receiver.
Both coax and toslink (optical) connect to an external. Intended for CD/SACD/DVD 5.1 and DVD DTS.
Unable to make my 9000es play my CD-R disks. Toast 5 and Mac G4.
I can email my Nikon 990 photos of the rear panel. Send a request.

Thanks very much for the response. I don't have a receiver (just a preamp plus a couple amps), but I will still run a set of analog outputs to the back of the preamp for those times when I can enjoy a movie at louder levels. I'm hoping sound will be much better than what I'm currently doing by running a cable from my TV to the preamp, then from a full-bandwidth preamp output to my headphone amp. The sound then is not too good. I'd like something to plug into directly. I am still considering getting a cheap DVD player since I'm sinking a lot of $$ into a CD53 CD player, new power conditioner & power cable, and new RCA connector cables.Stephen
Your proposed usage is fine.Currently SACD can only be listened to thru analog outputs so no problems there.
No problems with DVD either if you can live without surround sound.
That's the only drawback. Most DVD's have a 5.1 DD/DTS soundtrack that sounds best when decoded.Maybe a Sennheiser Lucas which produces a pseudo 5.1 effect thru 'phones ?

Thanks, Michael, for the comments on the Sony 9000 DVD player. I'm not really into HT as much as I am just the music. It sounds like the 9000 will work out for me both as an SACD player (when/if that market picks up more momentum) and as a DVD player for when I can upgrade my TV and have better sound while watching the movie. I really like watching movies and using my headphones/headphone amp setup. I hear so many more details that way.Stephen
