Hi,
I know nothing about projectors, but in a small room such as mine, losing the tv box would be nice. A salesman once told me my room was too small for a projector, but he may have been more interested in sales than candor. Thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
Perfect size!A nice DLP will throw a 120" image on that far wall like film!
E-me if you want to discuss.
It depends on the throw of the projector but you shouldn't really have a problem with most models out there -- subject to desired screen size. I have a room 20' X 18' and a sony 8" crt projector on a 120" diag screen (by the way, this is way too big for an ISF standard given the 8" projector but I'm willing to put up with it for the "wow" factor of the large screen...also, I have a dedicated room that is completely dark for viewing purposes) and the throw distance is about 14 feet. The only model that I know of to watch out for is a Denon lcd (don't recall the model) that had a very long throw distance. Just make sure to check the manufacturer's specs and you shouldn't have a problem.
dennis, can't you wait just a bit longer?i'm just a moment away from ordering the Panasonic PT50PD3 and a Farjewda (however they spell it) native rate series video processor to diddle with the downloaded HD satellite signal
the horror...
the horror...
price comes down every week the Japs have to worry about where 90% of their oil is going to come from...
To be frank, your statement seems rather unnecessary and a bit offensive. "Japs"? Some remnant of a WWII John Wayne movie perhaps? And if you do much of a search for info. it will probably become apparent that the economic woes in Japan are largely tied to banking/investment problems and overextension in troublesome real estate markets as well as the general downturn for the world economy rather than oil prices per se (especially considering that oil prices are not terribly high right now compared with historical highs).
Actually,
while I plan on going hi-def as soon as I can, that puts it in the 2-4 timespan. But you never know, we saw a nice tv a few weeks ago; and came quite close to financial trauma. How much is that faroudja plasma thingy gonna cost?
the last two nights have convinced me that my 8-year-old 27- inch "regular' TV is just finethere's really nothing out there i want to see
saw the final game of the World Series
...some of the best moments ever broadcast
makes you realize how pointless high definition television is--
as VK has noted time and again: "there's no 'there' there"
there's nothing to see, no choices, no reason to spend the money...
the failure of High Definition TV is a failure of imagination--there's absolutely nothing to see, and seeing that in "film quality" technology just makes one appreciate how pathetic life in 21st century America is
so instead of spending $11k on a 50" plasma and another $5k on the video scaler/processor
i bought a Kitchen Aid range:
Hi,
so call me a round heels; but I like ST:Enterprise a lot, and having never seen Farscape before, it's what I look forward to at the conclusion of a long day. So my plans are a still on. Got a SGHT the other day, and it had a review of a $3K DLP projector that the reviewer just raved over. This has me kinda excited; plasma is prob going to remain out of my ballpark, but this I could pull off. That way I could get a 6' screen without a monster of a box eating half the room.
oh my, that's what got me started...was in the bookstore with a $50 gift card and had a few bucks left over, so I pulled a few HT magazines out of the rack...and that's what got me started on this plasma screen thingi had no idea how big they'd gotten and how far the prices had dropped
but the wife caught me reading it (in the bathroom...usually i keep them hid under the matress until she goes to work), and gave me a definite "NO!"
made me feel like a dog that shit on the carpet
so to show her who wears the pants in the family i went right out the next day and bought the Bosch diswasher and the Kitchen Aid range and an exhaust hood (vented to the outside)
you know what...the new technology in kitchen appliances is simply awesome!
installed the stuff myself (i'll never do THAT again!)
now my patio is full of "used" kitchen appliances (waiting for my son-in-law to arrive with a borrowed pick-up)
the refrigerator is next
the house is so quiet i can hear the "chopper" on my 27" proscan TV
all i have to do is convince the wife that that TV noise is "unacceptable" (she can't hear noise, but can detect conversations clear across a crowded restaurant with ease...occupational skill, like being able to read papers on a desk upside-down)
I'm still holding out for the plasma (no cooling fan--it's quiet as a tomb), but it looks like I'll have to buy new cabinets and granite countertops for the kitchen first...and install a cherry floor in the master bedroom...
any day now
stay away from the magazine rack...especially the kitchen remodeling section
I'm doomed :)
Plasma is very cool. I am undecided about the whole 4:3 16:9 aspect ratio thing. I love widescreen, but most everything I watch is still 4:3, and I don't want the Star Trek crew looking fat, or Will Obeh for that matter. Fortunately, I can easily wait years to make that decision, as my money is spoken for; for quite some time to come.
I'm all over the plasma. . .got my eye on the Panasonic 50 incher. Now that the audio gear is paid off, I figure 6 or 7 more months eating pasta and tuna fish and it will be mine. You can set it for 4:3 and you get bars on each side of the display, but no fat star trek crew. Yeah, I get a complimentary subscription to Sound and Vision. . .there are drool stains on all the plasma shots.
l(A), I have mine setup in a 20x20 room. But I have the projector itself set about 17ft. from the screen. Works fine. I have had it as close as 13 feet but since have constructed a bigger screen so I moved it back. Guess it all depends on the projector and how big you want your screen size to be. At 17ft, using a 10' x 5' screen, a 2.35 aspect ratio flick will take up about 9' x 4.5'. I believe that there are newer projectors specifically geared for the HT market that you can place even closer....wider dispersion. SOunds like the salesman was tossing you the old red herring.
G'day,The room seems small but I have the projector installed on the back wall projecting on a 100" screen. It may not be ideal and up to specifications to THX yadda yadda, but it looks great and beats the shit out of RPTV or any tv for that matter. I can only comment on single lens projector but 18' is OK.
Good luck, regards Robert.
Robert,How high is your ceiling?
John
G'day JVH,I have an Infocus LP350 which, when mounted upside down, and horizontally 0 degrees, the screen is on the opposite wall mounted, 12" down. I set up the projector for 'enhanced widescreen', the DVD for 16:9 output, and with most DVD's, I get the best performance out of it. Although the projector is not 16:9 but 4:3, and I have the old black bars top and bottom, the picture is still excellent. The projector can still be zoomed in or out abit with my small room, if it wasn't for my 100" Da-Lite pull down screen, I would make the picture bigger.
Regards Robert.
