I'm quite sure I want to get a Sony 9000ES DVD/SACD player, but I don't know if this surround amp, being the current top-of-the-line ES model, is a good choice.I also like the Denon AVC1SE, but its much more expensive.
Any comments?

I believe you were refering to the VA555ES amp being the fire hazard...I am sitting here listening to an Eric Bibb SACD through the VA444ES amp with the SCD333ES player... i also have the DVP9000ES. I believe the only difference between the 555 and 444 was THAT remote (i use the Pronto so i don't care for Sony's remotes)
My system has in addition every tweak known to human kind from tech-sonic vibration dampeners, ASC tube traps, Custom made Audience interconnects Au24, a PS Audio Ultimate Outlet (20A) for the Amp and also a HTS5000 from Monster Power for all the other components minus the amp. I have isolation devices and i treat all my discs with Auric Illuminator prior to listening or viewing them.
Nuff said. I am very pleased with this Amp! The soundstage is awesome and depth is great. This is a great Amp for Music and HT. It ain't Rose, or Musical Fidelity, but for the money i believe it's winner. My system sounds great for being a mid-fi system.
I suspect that you could take a high-end amp and make it sound like $hit if you don't use good cabling, isolation and power.... but this amp sounds great in my system.
It does get very warm, but i have a great ventilation system for my A/V equipment so this has never been a problem.

It also has a recall for being a fire hazard....
Look into it !!!!
No Dolby pro logic II or any upgrade ability.
And last but not least it is SONY - Need I say more.
Although I've been building my 2-channel system for a while, you can call me a newcomer to home theater. I've built quite a satisfactory music system around Sonus Faber Concertino Home speakers. And these speakers, together with a JMLab subwoofer, is the starting point of my venture into combined HT + music system. Here's what I'm not so clear about:
1. Is Sony's reputation with HT enthusiasts really that bad, at least in amplifier department? I've read some good things about Sony ES amps someplace else, not to mention the well-accepted and raved-about 9000ES SACD/DVD player.
2. Is there any Sony ES amp that replaces the VA777ES? I like the cool programmable touchpad remote in this model, btw.
3. What do you think of the SOUND of this VA777ES amp? Do you just hate the Sony marque or this one in particular? Btw, pls note I don't mind doing without ProLogic II, DTS ES, and SurroundEX coz I don't have the extra speakers anyway. :) For me, sound is more important and features just need to meet the standard DD and DTS baseline.
Thanks
Like all manufacturers, Sony has a mixed product line, but their ES offerings, particularly the separates, are unbeatable for the money. I have four TA-N9000ES amps and the matching E9000ES preamp. To show this bittersweet nature, the preamp took about two firmware upgrades to make it a respectable high-end product; now the firmware is up to v 2.5 and I am very happy. The amp has been stellar since its inception.I thin Sony has a DA5ES and a DA3ES receivers as the replacement.
