hello,
I was planning on running the progressive scan component video thru the receiver. has anyone directly compared this with a straight run? It's a low-budget pioneer receiver (710 or 810 version), paired with one of the new JVC 7-disk DVD changers (cool!). I was planning on running it thru the receiver so it would be easier for my less stereo/electronically inclined parents to watch DVD's.for a non-videophile system, is it all that important? They will have a ~50" HD widescreen, which will probably be very revealing.
Thanks,

BTW, what do you guys think about the Hitachi HDTV monitors? My dad just bought one without checking out any of the selection at best buy. i'm talking about the 53" ~$2500-2800 model. in this price range, how do they compare?
Follow Ups:
I've emailed a couple of manufactures on this subject. The answer depends on the unit. For instance, this is one of the differences between the HK520 and the HK510. The 510 will degrade it and the 520 not, per the HK customer service. I imagine this will gradually move down do lower priced units over the next year or so,
Based on the bandwidth involved, I find it very hard to believe there is absolutely no degradation passing it through another device. A second set of cables alone would be enough to degrade it. Whether that degradation is noticeable, well, that's another story.-- Greg
True enough, I suppose. The more pieces of hardware between point A and Point B, the more possibilities for problems. In the case of passing a video signal through a reciever, I think the only thing that is beeing done to it is switching operations but no processing. This should not in of itself be a problem. I think the problem with the HDTV signals is that the bandwidth of the signals may be breater than that of the switching cicuitry so that that the reciever becomes a filter of some sort. In the case of HK the figures for the two recievers were approximately 25Mzh and 35Mhz. I'd have to check back to be sure. I also checked with Pioneer on one of their low cost recievers and they cited 10Mhz. I'm not sure how wide the figure has to be to pass HDTV signals without problems attributable to limited bandwidth, however, when even the manufacturer tells you their product can't do something adequately, I'm inclined to believe them. (I'm more skeptical in the reverse situation!)
Always run it direct. I've seen noticable degredation on expensive pre/pros, so I can only imagine how much there would be on a budget receiver.Regarding HDTVs, I've never been a fan of Hitachi. In that price range, I'd look at Toshiba and Mitsubishi.
why not a fan of hitachi?? quality, service, other? We can still cancel the order, but I was pretty happy with the deal we got on this one.
thanks,
