  I'll add Pioneer DV-37 to the list. I am a big pioneer fan when it comes to DVD, where I think Sony often drops the ball, i.e. not supporting VCDs or CD-Rs (they could have corrected recently). I have heard many good things about Panasonic, Pioneer and Toshiba for DVD players.

  Options should include:
  Panasonic RP-91 and/or Panasonic RP-56
  Sony DV-S700P (or whatever that model # is)
  JVC (in that price range, I'm not up with their model #s)
  Philips Q50
