Hi,How good is a AVR, for exable the Denon 4802, as a pre/procesor only?
How does it compare to a separate procesor regarding it's sound? I see that many separates use the same Sharcs and other DACs like the Denon.
Thank you.

Like to ask question of sound quality on DenonReceiver-Power Amp setup. Is the warm sound still there?I am not sure if Denon's warm sound is coming from preamp stage of the receiver or the power amp stage of the receiver. Or maybe from both stages.
Thanks.Ken
I know several people who do just that. I'll probably move that direction as well. Namely using the preouts on an AVR to take the place of a pre/pro. The external cosmetics of your ordinary AVR are inferior to a prepro with similar that typically cost at least 50% more, but I'm not nonvinced there are significant performance differences. At the moment, 80% of the time I'm just feeding my AVR through the 5.1 inputs so it really serves as little more than a volume control with switching. It's kind of tough to justify the cost of a pre-pro in such a circumstance. The based on pre-intro announcements, the only prepro that hold much interest for me is the upcomming Outlaw audio because it looks like the price will be reasonable and because each analog input has the option to bypass digital conversion and processing.
Hi,I expect too the Outlaw 950 pre-pro. Is it supposed to be better than the Denon 4802?
Thanks.
Sure they use the same chips etc. but usually the surrounding circuitry, power supplies etc. in a separate pre/pro is of higher quality and less fettled by cost constraints than AVRs.You're more likely to improve the sound by improving the quality of the processing instead of upgrading the amplifiers.
GIGO !

Good question! I was also thinking along similar lines: h/k avr-520 w/ bryston 3b-st or 5b-st for L+R or L+C+R. I would still use 4 or the 5 h/k builtin amps for side and read surround channels.Anyone else using h/k + bryston? Results?
The Denon feeds a Bryston 4B-ST through a Muse Model 3 Pre-amp for home theater and it sounds fantastic. The 4802 appears to be more advanced than my 5700 and a very good buy considering all it's features.
BTW I used my 5700 for a long time directly into the Bryston and it sounded great that way as well.
