I agree with GaryM, run it straight if you can.I have the same tv and the problem I ran into was that the wega has only one s-video input in the back and I have two s-video sources (sat. and dvd). I therefore ended up having to run all the s-video cables through my pre, which fortunately has "broadcast quality" video switching capabilites (blah, blah, blah) and does not degrade the quality of the video. Sounds like your pre is maybe degrading the video quality enough to bother you. If you only have one s-video source, run it straight to the tv. If that still isn't so hot, try a better s-video cable. There is a guy on ebay that sells beldon s-video cables for about $40 in 2m lengths, I recall. These are pretty good and 100X better than the crappy little cables that come with consumer components.
Follow Ups:
well, i finally got a chance to go back to good guys and i bought this expensive ass monster 3 s-video cable, it was like 40 bucks or something... tried all vid sources to the denon, and that new s-vid to the tv, AND since the coax input on the tv was open, i also set up that avenue from the cable box's coax straight to the tv. did that make sense?anyways, all i had to do was change the tv source to channel 3 to see the direct cable picture, and "video 1" to see the cable box. guess what - when it was on the cable box source, video 1, the image was a little washed out, like the brightness setting had gone up several notches...naturally it didn't look natural. so i guess i'll have to stick with watching cable through the coax. it looks great, but i would have liked to have everything run through my new denon. but i'm happy i'm finally done with this mess - thanx dudez for all your help:)
