I bought the Pioneer 434 DVD player last year and connected it
to my Sony 53" DTV (53HS10 I think) using progressive scan mode
only to realize that the images were slighty blurry. I turned off
progressive scan and used interlaced mode and it's alot sharper.
Someone said the progressive scan mode was poor in this model
even though it was highly recommended last year on this same
forum (LOL).
1 year later, the DVD player is acting up, it will randomly just
stop playing a movie and I feel it will die soon. I need a better
DVD player that will work well with my TV in progressive scan
mode and my budget is around $300 plus or minus.

Thanks to a fellow inmate I did some net research on this and found that the Philips is getting rave reviews. One is arriving here next week so I'll post personal opinion soon but, if you get a chance, try one out. Maybe a few more dollars than you were planning but it would seem to be heaps above most, even players costing 3X as much!John
I've been using Philps 1st generation DVD player before I replaced it with new Q50. And freeze seems to be a common problem of philips. However, the picture quality of my previous player was greater than any other at the its price level. Same thing to Q50. There are still some freeze problems of Philips. It, however, is much improved with Q50. My old player had to be reset (power on/off) and manually skip the section where it freeze. Q50 seems to do this automatically, and you can continue watch the movie without losing much. Do I like Q50. Hell ya. Simply, you cannot buy this good picture quality at $500 or less. But I dont trust anything other than picture quality of this DVD player. That is why I buy extra warranties on Philips player.
Many Philips Q50 users are experiencing a similar problem:Random freezes 2-3 times during spinning of a single disc
This doesn't happen with all discs nor with all Q50s, but it's common enough to take into consideration.
cheers,
Halcyon
DVDQ50AT DVD Player comes with Faroudja FLI2200 which performs "Pixel by Pixel film based and video based motion interpolation". If Faroudja is willing to put its name on the front panel, you know the video quality is going to be excellent.LC
I was waiting for a player that would play DVD-Audio discs and had progressive output. The Toshiba SD-4700, for around $200, seemed ideal. Not quite. Read my review for the sad facts.
