I am getting a Sony KP51HW40 16:9 Hi Scan RPTV. I cannot use satellite due to trees. I am wondering if the TV will upsample to 1080i by itself. I believe the Samsung converts NTSC to 1080i. Is this the way to go? I want it for the over the air HD broadcasts but most viewing will be cable. I can not get a straight answer on whether or not this TV will convert cable NTSC to 1080i by itself, or if I need a tuner to do it, or if I should do it. Also, it is amazing how ignorant virtually all the salespeople are on the subject of HD. Is there NO training at the chain stores?
Follow Ups:
The Sony Hi-scan upconverts NTSC to 960i using its internal scaler. HD signals display in native 1080i. 720p signals are downconverted to 480p.
If it's anything like the other Sony HD sets, yes it will upsample ntsc to 1080i.
I honestly don't know this model and whether or not it will upsample.I do however, agree with your opinion about the salesmen at chain stores. I find it infinitely annoying when I know more about their products than they do. I usually do my research then go listen and/or watch and largely ignore the salesperson. Typically they are just guessing and/or talking over their own heads.
