I have an extra pair of surround speakers. Pretty small bookshelf.
I've got them in the pro-logic time (~6 yeasr ago). It's Boston Acoustic, and 8 ohm. I cannot open the front mask, but it feels like it's got one tweeter and one midrange.Would it be a good idea to run both of them from a single center channel, using 2 speaker wires ? Would I gain any sonic benefit using this setup ? Of couse, assuming my amp can run them safely.
Thanks.Ken

Ken,The "interference" that some people talk about can be minimized by arranging the speakers in such a way as to minimize the distance between the tweeters of the two speakers. So, if you put them on their side and put the tweeter end towards the junction between the two, then you might be able to work it. The amount of interference, resulting in lobing patterns, would depend on many factors including the distance between the two drivers, the distance between the speakers and the listening position and the frequency of any signal coming out of the speakers. Only experimentation will show.
As for wiring the speakers, if the two speakers are 8 ohms each, then wire them serially, producing a 16 ohm load for the amplifier. That should take care of any amplifier load issues.

I agree with Lasermeister. Using two will just create destructive interference, which will distort voices in a VERY bad way. Also, this will put a large strain on your amp if you connect them in parallel as you said. Also, as Lasermeister said, your center channel speaker should be as good, if not BETTER quality as your other front channels. If this is for a dedicated HT setup, the center channel gets the most workout of all the speakers, and is really the breaking point between okay/good/great/mindblowing. If these speakers are not high quality, just run your system in Stereo until you get a good center. Cheers!Brian
I do agree that the center channel speaker quality is very important, I do not see a problem with this idea if your amp will handle a 4 ohm load. I don't understand the idea that the 2 would interfere with each other (unless impedence drops too low for amp). Stacking Advent speakers tweeter to tweeter was popular 20 years ago with great results. I do believe it is better to have matching brands of fronts and center if possible. The idea is to match tonal qualities. Make sure your amp will handle the load. Give it a try. However if you had them laying around it is probably because they were not as good as some others which took their place. BTW I've been running a pair of Infinity 2000's with Adcom amps for 2 years in this configuration with no problem .
No, I would not do this. Use either one or none. If the quality of these speakers is not as good as your left and right speakers, you might just as well run your system with no center channel.Todd
