I have a new Mitsubishi HD ready widescreen TV that will handle progressive scan info. My current DVD player (non progressive)through component cables produces an excellent picture through the TV's line doubler. Will I see a dramatic improvement if I hook up a true progressive scan DVD player to the TV. If so, what moderately priced progressive scan DVD players (under $500.00) do you recommend?
Follow Ups:
I believe Sears has it for like $230, and it has switchable progressive scan!!! Which means you can switch prog scan in and out as you are watching a DVD!!! Plus it got great reviews, and is considered one of the best bang-per-buck progressive scan DVD players on the market. It even has the high end Faroudja Sage chipset internally, which traditionally expensive players have. You just can't go wrong with this one. On my HDTV, it makes a difference.
I have a Toshiba 5700 running into a Mits VS 50805 (also HD ready). The improvement using prog scan DVD over my first generation DVD player was palpable, but the picture is far from perfect. There is still some glimmer and motion artifacts on difficult source material. I think there may be better DVD players for the same money.
Yes, you will see significant improvements. While there are many models available, if you are willing to spend $500 it's hard to go wrong with the Panasonic RP-91. It's picture is about as good as you can get without spending over $2,000. The Denon 2800 has been buggy and the subject of numerous firmware updates. The PR-56 Panny lacks scaling features the RP-91 possesses and the Philips Q50 has had its share of problems and firmware fixes too. Check the following link. Search their site for recommended or best players and you will find a wealth of information.joe
The good news is, performance is getting better and better for less money.A few to think about to look at / listen to when you can:
Philips Q50
Panasonic RP-91
Panasonic RP-56
Denon 2800 (Might get it on clearance at this price)
Sony DVP-NS700P
Toshiba SD-4700 and SD-5700
JVX XV- *75* in the last part of the model #.These are some of your choices, but certainly not all of them :-)
